The pan-Arab daily AL HAYAT published a report by Reuters Tuesday alleging that the powerful Shiite group Hizbullah was behind the 2005 murder of Lebanon's former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Information in the report was compiled by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC). Other Lebanese newspapers did not publish today because they went on holiday Monday to mark the 67th anniversary of Lebanon's independence. Voice of Lebanon Radio Tuesday morning broadcast excerpts from the report. The radio quoted Hizbullah sources as dismissing the report as "fabricated and intended to split the Lebanese people." Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has warned that if his group, or any of its members, is implicated in the killing, the whole of Lebanon will be completely destabilized. He denied Hizbullah, backed by Syria and Iran, was in any way involved in the killing.
